Hi, I’m Marie,

I am an artist and a registered Art Therapist and I have always used creativity as a way to bring balance and mindfulness to my own life, especially during difficult times.

In my work as an Art Therapist I have seen time and again how impactful making art can be for my clients. I am honored to work with women in all stages of life, providing services that promote healing and growth.

Why I created ArtStar

I love what I do as an Art Therapist and although I have always felt drawn to focusing my work solely on helping women and teen girls, it was during the pandemic that I felt called, both personally and professionally, to create ArtStar. As a working single mother of daughters I felt drawn to do something to help address the issues women all over the world were facing.

These strange days (and years) gave me an overarching sense (as I am sure you felt too) that the world is changing. As is often the case, with change comes opportunity! I believe that change is possible for all of us and I hope that the turmoil we have all been through will be the catalyst for transformation of many things, including women's lives.

I created ArtStar, to do more of what I love, and to be part of supporting positive change for other women. I have found that when women can come together comfortably, in a space where they can explore, express and bear witness for one another, that there is great potential for healing.

My hope is that ArtStar will provide women with creative options for working on personal growth and that "The Lounge" will provide women with a place to share, learn and engage in meaningful ways as a community.

I hope you will join us.

Warmly, Marie

My Background

I am a registered Art Therapist with a Masters degree in Art Therapy from New York University and a practicing artist with a Bachelors of Fine Arts from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art. I have over 10 years experience working with clients of all ages in a variety of clinical and community settings, both individually and in art-based therapy groups, treating challenging emotional, cognitive, and social issues through Art Therapy.

I have 11+ years, as a director of two non-profit organizations serving older adults and five years as a business owner where I developed programs and services, primarily serving women, teens and girls in the community and through consulting work with various organizations.

How I work

I offer a warm, compassionate and creative approach in my work with clients. My approach is based in feminist theory, positive psychology, attachment theory and trauma informed care.  In addition to my skills as an art therapist I utilize tools such as mindfulness techniques, cognitive behavioral therapy, breath work, therapeutic writing and somatic/nervous system regulation techniques.

I am a skilled teacher and facilitator and utilize a wide variety of art materials and techniques in groups and sessions. These include collage, painting, drawing, printmaking, writing, photography, silk screening, sculpture, clay, natural/found objects, fabric arts and more….

"At ArtStar Marie created a warm and welcoming world brimming over with appealing colors and textures. My daughter could not wait to dive right into making work with Marie. Together they designed brilliant masks as well as simple drawings with pen and ink. Art Star was a safe space for creativity, calm and restorative art-making. Marie’s calm guidance and insightful nature supported my daughter to become the confident person she is today."
