ART THERAPY

Who can Art Therapy help?

Art Therapy is beneficial for treating a wide range of issues and conditions and is used with every population imaginable. Anyone (and everyone!) can benefit from Art Therapy and no skill or experience with art is needed.

Art Therapy can be helpful for anyone experiencing anxiety, depression, ptsd and issues around perfectionism, over-functioning, worrying, shame, negative self-talk, feelings of worthlessness/ low self-esteem, body image issues, obsessive behaviors and for stress during life transitions. Many clients I work with have trauma of some kind and need help to heal and change the way this history has affected their nervous system and coping behaviors.
 FAQs about Art Therapy

How does Art Therapy help?

As Art Therapy involves both verbal and non-verbal expression, it allows for a fuller expression and release of emotions. When you connect to yourself, through the use of color, symbols, metaphor (and your physical body through motor activity), to express and create representations of inner states, this allows for a more direct connection to your subconscious (where unresolved issues live). This process can help release pent up feelings, provide clarity and deeper insight, ease suffering and heal old wounds.

We all have an innate creativity within us, some people have just lost touch with this and don't feel they are "creative." For many people Art Therapy can provide a new, and often much needed avenue of expression and can lead to a re-discovery of parts of the self that may have not been active since childhood. This often results in an increase in playfulness, curiosity, inspiration and a feeling of aliveness.

What happens in an Art Therapy session?

A typical session will generally include talking, art making, and discussion of art work. However because sessions are catered to each client's treatment needs they can look different for each person and may include different forms of art making and materials. For instance I might ask you to engage in a dialogue through line, work with colors in paint, or explore the physical quality of clay. The focus is not on the end product. It's about how the art lets you express emotions and connect with parts of yourself.

I also often integrate other useful tools into a session that allow for expression and reflection such as writing, guided visualization and nervous system regulation exercises.

At the end of our session I may ask you to do some journaling, practice mindfulness techniques or do some art between sessions if this seems helpful to your progress.

Scheduling:
D
uring our initial consultation, we will select a weekly day and time that will be your spot throughout therapy.

Time in Session:
We will meet for 60, 75 or 90 minute sessions. (75 + min is ideal*)

Why I don't offer the standard 55 minute therapy session and suggest 75 min sessions.
Most people find that an hour long session can feel tight. The longer session time allows for ample time for talking, art making, review and wrapping up the session.

Frequency: I recommend weekly sessions because I know this is the frequency and consistency needed for clients to experience lasting change and break patterns/beliefs that have been present since childhood. If bi-weekly and monthly sessions are your preference I will try to accommodate this.

Duration of Treatment :
The duration of therapy is tailored to each individual client. Most of my clients are in therapy for at least six months. Therapy ends when you feel you've reached your goals (or when I gently nudge you that you're ready).

Art Materials

Art Therapy does not require a lot of materials and can be done with very basic supplies you likely already own.  As you get comfortable expressing yourself through art you may want to incorporate more creative practices into your life. At this point you may want to invest in some new, or different, materials for use at home.

For appointments via Telehealth you will use your own materials and a basic supply list will be provided to you after the introductory consultation.

In-Person Appointments: All supplies will be provided for in-person sessions.
